The Financial Services Tribunal has dismissed the Union's request to include qualified Non Seniority List employees in our Pension Plan.
Click here to read or download a copy of the decision.
The Union is in the process of deciding whether or not to appeal this decision. The matter will be on the agenda of our next Union Meeting which will be scheduled in the near future.
Working People Need Unions: We formed our union because we could not depend on employers to provide us with dignity, a measure of security and a rising standard of living. And, over the years, we did make impressive gains. But our objectives remain far from fulfilled, and with even our past gains under attack, we need unions today as much as we ever did". Union Respectfully Disagrees With Ms Saltman's Decision
The Union respectfully disagrees with Ms Saltman's decision that the unwanted ticket was a cash shortage for purposes of the ESA and the CPMA Regs. Or that it was a monetary transaction for purposes of the collective agreement. Ms Saltman seems to have bought into the argument that the the integrity of the betting systems should take precedence over the welfare of employees.

The CAW Family Education Program
Some consider it the best kept secret in the CAW. It's like taking a family holiday with your union at the CAW's beautiful Family Education Centre in Port Elgin, Ontario on the shores of Lake Huron. The CAW provides, free of charge, food and lodging to each participant (and family) during their stay at the Education Centre.

December News - Member Poll, Pension Matters, WEG Accountability Campaign
Pension Matters:
Unfortunately, there was not enough interest from our Plan Members to conduct the Pension Seminars scheduled for October, 2009.
The Power Point presentation, which was to be featured at the sessions, is available for viewing or downloading > Click here
The Part-Time pension complaint hearings conducted by the FSCO tribunal are completed. We will post the decision of the Tribunal when it becomes available.
WEG Accountability Campaign:
Local Union Representatives have ongoing meetings with Woodbine Management and CAW National Representatives to be informed of the planned changes to our workplace.
Together with CAW National, our Local is planning a campaign to our Provincial Government to demand accountability from racetrack operators for the $millions in slot revenues they receive.
Accountability for:
· the creation and maintenance of decent full time jobs
· evidence of racetrack industry building
· safe, serviced, responsible gambling facilities
We are launching our first poll:
The first in a series of polls to engage our membership in the issues that affect us all.

On a sad note: Former long time Seniority List Member Pat Petrie passed away on Thursday, November 12, 2009.

Our Brothers and Sisters Need Our Support
As you may be aware, there are two long and difficult strikes by our fellow CAW brothers and sisters that are still in need of support. Our Local has offered some financial assistance but money alone is never enough. The way to help is firstly to be aware and then to participate in any actions or rallies when ever possible. As you know, picket line support, is always welcome and indeed the best sign of solidarity. Please get out there and support these workers.
